⚡ The Speed

The scam relied on urgency. "I need a deposit for a bid NOW." The victim transferred the money before his brain could doubt the video.

The 10-Minute Heist

April 2023

The Friend Request

A businessman in Baotou receives a WeChat message from a "Friend." The profile photo and details match perfectly. He accepts.

The Call

"It's really me"

The "Friend" initiates a video call. The businessman sees his friend's face and hears his voice. The friend claims he needs 4.3 Million Yuan for a business bid deposit immediately.

The Transfer

Money Gone

Trusting his eyes, the businessman wires the money. The "friend" hangs up. The total interaction lasted minutes.

The Realization

"I didn't call you"

The businessman texts his actual friend to confirm receipt. The friend replies: "What money? I never called you." The police are notified.

The Technology: Cheap & Scary

1. Real-Time Face Swap

The suspect, "Guo," bought AI software on Telegram for only $430. This software maps a target face onto the scammer's webcam feed instantly.

2. Training Data

Where did they get the friend's face? Social Media. WeChat Moments, TikTok, or public photos provided enough data to build the AI model.

3. The "Liveness" Trick

Unlike a static photo, the deepfake blinked, moved, and spoke. This "Liveness" convinced the victim it wasn't a recording.

Consumer Defense: Don't Be Next

This scam targets trust. Here is how to verify reality when your eyes lie to you.

🔄

1. The "Call Back" Rule

Golden Rule: If someone calls asking for money, hang up. Call them back on their original phone number. If the scammer is using a fake account, they won't answer your real call.

🔐

2. Establish a Code Word

Pick a weird word with your close friends/family (e.g., "Pineapple"). If they call in an emergency, ask for the word. AI cannot guess it.

3. Question Urgency

Scammers always say "Right Now." Real emergencies can usually wait 2 minutes for you to verify. If they pressure you to act fast, it's a trap.

🙈

4. Private Profiles

Don't feed the AI. If your social media is public, scammers can download your photos to clone YOU and scam your parents. Set profiles to "Friends Only."
